I'm very interested in pixel art, but I also love modelling and work primarily as an environmental artist. Combining these two things could attract attention in the art and game markets and create a fresh visual experience. However, I’ve noticed that most attempts to merge these two styles follow the older “PlayStation 1 style,” characterised by low resolution and a vintage look. While nostalgic, this style lacks the clarity and depth that modern viewers crave.

This observation sparked an idea: what if I could merge pixel art with 3D modelling in a way that feels nostalgic yet also sharp, detailed, and high-definition? This approach would not only modernise pixel art but redefine it.

Over the past few weeks, I've studied various techniques to develop this concept. The classic PlayStation 1 style combines low-poly modelling and pixelated textures, often achieved by either painting textures in a pixelated style or downscaling images to a very low resolution and applying them to the model. Some approaches include using plugins to render models in a pixelated style or creating facets with pixel maps, adjusting the shape based on the patterns to assemble a 3D effect. While each technique has its charm, I find the latter two methods more immersive and visually appealing as they go beyond the limitations of low-resolution nostalgia.

My goal is to create a retro yet modern visual effect that satisfies the public’s interest in high-definition visuals while retaining the unique charm of pixel art. I may also incorporate Buddhist architectural elements, as religious architecture has always attracted me with its aesthetics and atmosphere. Combining this ancient architecture with high-definition pixel art could add cultural and visual depth to my work.

I’m researching and analysing PS1-style artwork and how these effects are achieved using low-poly modelling and scaled-down textures. Tools like Blender and GIMP play an important role in this, allowing me to experiment with mapping techniques and pixel effects. I plan to document each experiment, including the challenges I encounter and how I solve them.
